default
Posted on Tue, 15 Nov 2016
Question: My Mom is 72 y old and has symptoms of belly/ stomach pains with a lot of mucus coming from her rectum. History of right inguinal/ femoral hernia that protrudes the size of a baseball.
She just had it checked by ct scan to make sure it was not strangulated. It was ok. She also has a history of divertiolsis with rectal bleeding in the past and gallstones. Why is she having this mucus problem?

Brief Answer:
infection or inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Mucus in the stool is never normal. It can come from infection or from inflammation. If she is having pain then she needs to see her doctor soon and she may need a colonoscopy.
It could be that she is having an episode of diverticulitis. This is when the diverticulosis gets inflamed and infected.
There are other problems that can cause infection and inflammation in the bowel.
Encourage her not to put this off but to see a doctor as soon as possible so that she can be treated and relieved of her pain.
Also these things tend to get worse the longer treatment is delayed. She should see a doctor today if possible
