What Causes Loss Of Vision Post A Cataract Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Jul 2016
Question: I had cataract and ppv + gas bubble (90%) done last Thursday. Prior to the procedure, vision in my eye was pretty good - a little cloudy and some peripheral dark spots, but good enough. 1 day post-op review with doctor and was told both cataract and retina were success. However, I have 0% vision in my eye. Totally black and no light recognition at all. Retina doctor said that maybe it was because of such large bubble, or maybe bubble putting pressure on optic nerve, or maybe inflammation of optic nerve (started me on oral steroid). He said no reason to think that optic nerve was damaged, and just to wait a few days for the bubble to get smaller. I'm now +4 days post-op and still zero vision / zero light recognition. Could this really be from the bubble? When could I expect to see any improvement?

Wait for a while.

My dear,
Thanks for several your query to us
This usually doesn't happen.Howsoever large the bubble is and what ever other damage may be to the retina, your light perception and projection,as we call the presence of light and correctly ascertaining the side from which it is shining has to be intact to give us any hope of future recovery of vision.
Can you get a second openion ?After 4+days of steroid things should start showing improvement. This has to be a nerve injury. The silver lining is that there is always a chance of good recovery. The amount of final recovery is related to shorter time span of commencement of recovery. For any visual recovery step one is perception of light.Earlier it starts better it is.
Treatment wise steroid is what can be offered.Any further query in this regard please do get back to me .
