What Causes Locking Of The Knee Followed By Sharp Pain Upon Movement?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: My right knee started hurting when I dropped something went down on my knee to get it, the knee locked and then I could not get back up for a minute. Since then I have sharp pain in my knee when sitting, standing or laying down. It almost seems like the bones are rubbing together. My dad had both knees replaced in his early 60's I am 54 and very healthy and active. I can barely walk right now.

Brief Answer:
Can be osteoarthritis or a ligament injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and rubbing that you have now can be due to osteoarthritis or a ligament injury. This can be properly diagnosed with an MRI scan of the knee. It is best to avoid weight bearing on the knee till then and do continue with the mild pain killers that you are taking.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for the information. I will make an appointment with my doctor. I was a little fearful about ligament damage...this knee has given me problems at different parts of my life so could be. I am heading to New York for vacation so will bring along crutches. XXXXXXX

If I do walk on it will I damage it worse?

Brief Answer:
You can walk as long as it is not painful.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can walk to some extent as long as it is not painful. Avoid all the painful movements. You can use an elastic knee support too.
Hope my answer is helpful.
