What Causes Left Arm Paralysis, Right Hip Bruise And Groin Pull?

Question: My husband fell, blunt trauma last Sunday. He is 63 years old and is a fall risk as he had a stroke 8 years ago while fighting a a fire as a fireman (chemical reaction) Anyway, he was left with left arm paralysis but everything else was OK. He fell last Sunday. He can stand and move both legs when in his wheelchair. He has had normal V/ S and is cognition is fine. But he is afraid to walk. He has a right hip bruise. Our doc has been treating him with norco which I am starting to wean back due to constipation. He refused treatment, yet he said he pulled a muscle in his groin and that is the reason for him not walking .. !!!! Help.

He has had one or two formed bowel movements but most of it is fluid. Again, he is AAO x 3; he said he afraid to walk due to groin pain. Very stubborn, former paramedic. I am an RN and at my witts end. I went to the doctor and showed him a pix of his bruise on his right hip and doc said that is typical of a fall, but since he can stand and move his feet around while in his wheelchair, he is ruling out a fx.

I think he needs PT - conversion syndrome? so afraid to walk and fall again.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your response.
Fear of fall is a common feature in patients with prior history of stroke.
Their weakness and imbalance contributed the fear.
An actual fall further affects him.
I agree with the doctor that there may be no fracture especially since he says power is normal.
I would suggest a good physiotherapy for him.
That is the best way to get him out of the chair and walking.
I also suggest a CT brain to rule out NPH.
It's a frequent cause of fear of fall which is often missed in stroke patients.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
