What Causes Knee Pain, Itchy Rashes On Shoulders, Neck And Upper Back?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: I have very mild pain in one knee when weight is applied to it i.e. when squatting down and up. I have no pain when climbing stairs, walking, or doing other activities. Prior to this pain, I developed an itchy rash on my shoulders, neck, upper back, and behind my ears. The rash consisted of small raised bumps that were slightly red. The rash went away within a week. I have now noticed that my ankles are swollen, but not in pain. Could this be characteristic of HIV and ARS?

Brief Answer:
Not related to HIV or ARS.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your query and understand the concern you are worried about. Being your physician try to solve it at the earliest.

Knee and ankle pain with swelling may be due of inflammation of multiple body joints. Take some pain killer like combiflam or brufen along with some calcium supplements. Do hot fomentation over the affected areas. Avoid squatting or flexing the knees over and above your comfort level.

Itchy skin rashes could be due to some allergy or other fungal infection. You can consult skin specialist if recurrence of symptoms will occur. Not to get tensed or worried unless and until there is any risk or exposure having HIV is present. So tell me in detail if any thing was there to explain you in more better way.

Thank You

Thank you for responding, Dr. Jangid. I had unprotected anal sex with my partner, and he is HIV positive. He has an undetectable viral load and is on ART. Should I still be concerned about HIV?

Brief Answer:
Get tested for HIV to confirm.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

You had unprotected anal sex with your partner who is HIV positive than concern is there but if he is on ART and has undetectable viral load chances are reduced to much extent because as such also unprotected anal sex is less risky than vaginal sex.

The best way to confirm whether you are positive or not is to get tested so I will advice you to go for 4th generation HIV Duos test after 1 month of last exposure to get highly reliable and accurate result. Don't get tensed or anxious and hope for the best.

Thank You

Thank you again, doctor. Given this new information, do my symptoms seem suggestive of ARS?

Brief Answer:
Don't think these symptoms are related to ARS.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back once again.

Skin rashes is one of the symptoms of ARS but I don't think it is any how related to ARS in your case so better to go for testing to rule out the cause.
