What Causes Itchy Red Patches On Penis After Intercourse?
Question: HI Dr. I'm a 62 yr old, fairly healthy male. I noticed this symptom a couple of times.
After intercourse last night with my spouse of 39 years, I noticed that the head of my penis had a few little red patches (very small) and it was very itchy. I took a generic alternative to Viagra as well. this morning, the redness has improved but still some minor itching etc. No visible abnormality etc. This happened once prior I believe after I shaved the hair on my penis. Could this be an infection, yeast, etc.? If so do I need to see a dr
with these minor symptoms or just wait to see if it goes away. For some reason I'm anxious about this? Also I should tell you that I used benedryl in the last 24 hours and I put 1% corizone ointment . The symptons are mostly on the head of the penis, versus the shaft. I went on line and I purchased 1% Lotrimin . I also have a tube of 1% cortisone. What do you recommend?

any kind of discharge from the red patches

In my opinion you do not need any of these ointment neither cortizone or lotrimin until diagnosis confirmed, you should apply an antiseptic ointment like mupirocin or soframycin after proper cleaning of the site.

i have a slightly enlarged prostrate and take alfusosisn
no burning or increased frequency
no discharge
i will try to take a photo but right now it looks almost normal
just the head feels sensitive but not as itchy
after i clean and take off the ointment i will try to send you a photo
i do want to know more about antiseptic ointment ;? is this over the counter
and how often should i use etc.

Looking at your detailed description it seems to be a treatable condition, so you need not to worry. It mostly looks secondary to irritation or rough intercourse. Sometimes due to lack of sufficient lubrication during intercourse one can notice red and itchy lesions. It should get better in a day or two.
If the itching is troubling you, you may use benadryl. Alternatively instead of a steroid, you can try topical claritin lotions. Keep a watch on the rashes. If it worsens, visit a doctor to rule out infections.
Any way keep it clean and let it heal. Avoid intercourse until you get better.
