What Causes Intrusive Fast Forward Thoughts When Diagnosed With Auditory Processing Disorder?

Question: I have 14 year old son that is complaining that from time to time things around him seem to move as if in fast-forward. He claims that this started to happen quite rarely when he was in year 4 at school, and he is now in year 8. The frequency of these episodes can be up to once a month, lasting anywhere from a few minutes up to 2 days in rare circumstances. He says that the symptoms seem to be lasting longer now than they were when he first noticed them 4 years ago. When he first noticed the symptoms 4 years ago they would last less than a minute, and were a lot less frequent. He is now finding that the symptoms are more confronting, and finds that one thing that helps is to rest in a darkened room with all devices turned off, and no noise. I am very concerned given that his mother suffered with similar symptoms at a similar age, and there is a history of depression and psychosis in his mother's family. Hopefully you can offer some assistance in recommending where we go from here with our investigations.

Kind Regards,

Brief Answer:
neuro-psychological investigations are required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern for your son.

I want to know what was diagnosis of his mom if she has suffered from such symptoms and how was she treated.

From your history there are following possible causes.

- He seems to have some neurological problem in perception. His visual check up should be done by an ophthalmologist for the same.

- It can be a kind of seizure(convulsion) for which evaluation by a neurologist is required. EEG and MRI brain can be done if needed.

- If both above findings come true , he should be examined by a psychiatrist as this is likely some psychological problem then.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,

Hello and thank you for your reply. Liam's mother was diagnosed with severe depression including psychosis about 7 years ago. She was hospitalised and treated using antidepressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. She is now stable using mood stabilizers and antidepressants. Liams hearing was checked 4 years ago and there were no problems. However he was diagnosed with auditory processing disorder and also an ophthalmologist diagnosed him with a tracking disorder of the eyes. He underwent treatment for both these disorders however because of the late age he began the treatment a full recovery wasn't achieved. His reading and writing abilities are well below his current required abilities for a year 8 student. Also both of his sister's aged 17 and 23 have suffered with mild to severe anxiety problems.

Hope this information is helpful in further refining your advice.

Brief Answer:
It is related to eye or Intelligence level

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for information.

Liam's problem can be due to visual defects or low intelligence level. His IQ assessment should be done.
There is less possibility of major psychological problem at present.
He needs assessment by psychiatrist and psychologist and less likely neurological problem is there.

Please go for psychological assessment of XXXXXXX and revert back to me with reports.

Take care.
