Convulsion

What is Convulsion?

A convulsion is a medical condition where body muscles contract and relax rapidly and repeatedly, resulting in an uncontrolled shaking of the body. Because a convulsion is often a symptom of an epileptic seizure, the term convulsion is sometimes used as a synonym for seizure. However, not all epileptic seizures lead to convulsions, and not all convulsions are caused by epileptic seizures. Convulsions are also consistent with an electric shock and improper Enriched Air Scuba Diving. For non-epileptic convulsions, see non-epileptic seizures.

The word "fit" is sometimes used to mean a convulsion or epileptic seizure.

Hi! I am taking one tablet 100 mg per day eptoin tablets For 20 years for anti convulsion. I had seizure 20 years back but never had there after. I used to take 3 tablets per day for 4 years. Later the doctor reduced. From this month onward, I am taking only 50 mg tablets. I am no more in contact of my previous doctor. I am fine and fit now. Shall I keep taking 50 mg tablets or shall I discontinue? What are the side effects for a long use of eptoins? From Ram Singh

doctor1 MD

Hello Ram, Thanks for your query.
Since its been 20 years you had your last attack of seizure and you have been on successful monodrug therapy, it is ideal to withdraw your drug. Long term eptoin/phenytoin can cause gum hypertrophy, cerebellar ataxia, hirsuitism and decrease in blood cells. The...

I am a drug addict who has been in recovery for a year and a half; I used a lot of cocaine on a regular basis for a few years. the other day I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest, I also had 3 seizure/convulsion episodes an hour or so after that. since then (6 days later) I can't even walk up the stairs without feeling like I just ran 10 marathons; I begin sweating and get the feeling of my heart pounding against my chest. i'm waiting to have tests done and i'm seeing a nuerologist which was all ordered today by the cardiologist I saw. my question is; does my past cocaine history have anything to do with whats going on now? the cardiologist said it could be a result of permanent damage of my heart caused by my addiction but I haven't used in well over a year?

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Long term use of cocaine can cause enlargement of left side of the heart, can cause ECG changes, and is associated with coronary atherosclerosis (blockage of heart blood vessels) even in young users who have no other risk that would otherwise lead to this condition.
These changes can be...

The blackout with stiffness with altered behaviour for prolonged period following that is suggestive of a seizure/convulsion. Apart from the CT scan she also needs to undergo EEG which assesses the electrical activity of the brain. Apart from establishing the...

hi, I was recently at a hospital and went into convulsions or what I think was a partial seizure as I was aware of my surroundings but had no control over my arms and legs. the dr told me it was anxiety or hyperventillation. it happened 3 times that night each worse than the first. the dr gave me ativan and sent me home with no answers. I can hear a whooshing sound in my ears I get headaches on one side of my head, I have white flashes in my vision, spontaneous dizziness, my hands will suddenly start to go numb sometimes creeping to the rest of my body then causing convulsions or locking up tight. followed by anxiety. the anxiety has never happened first always after. also severe fatigue all the time. joint pains

And will the convulsions recurr even on medication.

doctor1 MD

Hello,

Thank you for posting a query.

Look, your cousin’s wife is most probably suffering from epilepsy. The description indicates possibility of generalized tonic cloinc seizure. That means, the convulsion is of some higher grade.

Now, the great mistake she had done was to stop the medication...
