What Causes Insomnia, Weakness And Erection Problem After Having Statins?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: I am am 67-years old male. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol level (both under control) and have had three AFib events (at least one due to sport activity). For all of this am taking Diovan, Atenolol, Crestor, Propafenone and PRADAXA. Feel at loss of energy, have heartburns and overall feel lousy. My lifestyle has been previously very healthy (average amount of sports), lacto-ovo-vegetarian food for about 20 years. Would like to reduce the amount of drugs I take as life starts to be miserable for me - feel weak, tired, lack of erections, heartburns and have insomnia (where before I had very good sleep). Any suggestions? Which medication and how to stop taking?.

Brief Answer:
Crestor...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

I have gone through your medical data, and noted that you are using Crestor, which is a lowering cholesterol drug of the statin group. It is damaging muscles of the body including of the heart or muscular-skeletal.

I advise to talk with the doctor who prescribed Crestor to stop taking it.

Pradaxa is a blood thinner drug. Blood tests evaluation like INR, prothrombin time, etc. are recommended to determine whether problems with blood thinning are also present.

All the best!

Thank you very much for your prompt answer, Dr Sejdini. Your answers confirm my thinking.

As a matter of fact I wanted to have a "second" opinion to my doctors (cardio and family).

I live in North XXXXXXX but am of European origin. I believe doctors here overprescribe medications (but do not want to acknowledge it). Are you based and educated in UK? This may explain your view on the medications I am taking.

Yesterday, I had gone to my cardiologist and told her I want to stop Pradaxa. After a discussion she agreed with me stopping it. Next will be Crestor.

What do you think of PROPAFENONE and its side-effects?

Thank you again for your answer.

Brief Answer:
Following suggestions...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXX,

The medications you are taking are the golden standard to use. The aim to determine whether the benefits from using the drugs you are taking outweighs their side effects. If the side effects are affecting your daily activities, no need to continue using them.

With regards to propafenone, apart GI problems, other side effects include those related to irregular heart beats, which might be experienced like lack of energy.

The heartburn you are feeling might be related to medications you are taking, especially when it comes to Pradaxa (gastritis/GERD). Apart taking it off, I also recommend to take antacids and PPIs to get relief.

All the best! Let me know if I can assist you further! If no more questions, do not forget to close this discussion and rate my answer.
