Posted on Fri, 21 Oct 2016
Question: Hi.. just wanted to ask a question regarding blood pressure. My dad is on blood pressure and typr 2 diabetes medication. his bp is normally 150/80-90 ish. he took it today at the pharmacy and at forst ot was 230/89 and we waited fove minutes and took it again and it was 195/86. he thinks ots because he was walking round it was high and he didnt want to test it again. we left and he is convinced it shouldhave come down.
Is he correct to assume the high bp was the result of walking round for a while and that it should drop when he rests back to a normal level?

Brief Answer:
Blood pressure goes down at rest. That is when you should measure to check

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

Your father is right when he says that blood pressure goes high when you walk around, when a person it is aggitated, sweating, ect. It decreases when you are at rest.
So what we recommend it is to measure it while a person it is at least 15 minutes at rest. The blood pressure at rest it is the true value of blood pressure

I want to state though that if it will return to normal or not, will be determined by that value. So my recommendation it is for your father to measure blood pressure regularly for 1 week, twice/day at rest, and to show those values to his doctor so the doctor can evaluate if the medicines your father it is taking are correct or he needs to be evaluated again.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need more clarifications. Otherwise please kindly close and rate the answer.
