What Causes Hematoma In The Uterus After D&C?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Jul 2014
Question: I am a 40year old female who went in for a D&C after a miscarriage. Something went wrong, I lost 2250 cc of blood and ended up with a hysterectomy. This is the report from the ultrasound during the procedure. Uterus is enlarged consistent with recent pregnancy state. Large heterogeneous mass-like structure measuring 6*5*5.5 cm is seen within the mid-body of the uterus. It is hard to separate this but appears to involve the myometrium and endometrium. By the end of the exam imaging demonstrates that this mass-like area has changed in appearance and now has some cystic fluid collection within it. Therefore it involving hemotama given the history of bleeding. The constellation of findings when correlated with a history suggest there may be a localized perforation/fluid collection outside, right side of the uterus.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

As per the ultrasound report, it appears as though there had been a perforation of the uterus during the dilatation and curettage and this resulted in collection of blood around the uterus. If a histopathogy was performed on the removed uterus, it should have given us more definite opinion. If it was performed, I would like to review it.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.
