default
Posted on Tue, 30 Sep 2014
Question: I am 14 days late for my period and today I had real heavy bleeding and clot looking stuff for about 8 hours and then it just stopped and haven't seen anything else. What could this be and would this possibly be a sign of pregnancy or having a miscarriage? I also have been having symptoms of pregnancy for the last week or so,
Tender, swollen breast
fatigue
Nausea
cravings

Brief Answer:
abortion may be one of the possibilities.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I am Dr Madhuri a consultant gynecologist and will be handling this query.

If you are sexually active and do not use contraception then pregnancy and abortion is the first possible reason for this. Swollen breasts are not always due to pregnancy. The above symptoms may be due to pregnancy or due to many other unrelated conditions as they are not typical of pregnancy. So get a urine pregnancy test done as soon as possible to rule out pregnancy. The test may come negative despite a pregnancy in cases of missed or complete abortion.

Another common reason is hormonal imbalance and stress leading to delayed periods. Most of them correct spontaneously after a healthy diet and regular exercise. Ovarian cysts also cause similar symptoms. Rare causes at your age are simple uterine tumors called fibroids [ very rare at 19 years].

So as of now, get a urine pregnancy test as soon as possible. If it is negative and there is no bleeding, wait for the next period. If the period is regular then there is no need to worry.
If the urine test is positive or the symptoms recur then you will need to see your doctor.

Hope this satisfies your query.
