What Causes Headaches With Involuntary Muscle Jerking?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Jun 2014
Question: Hi I have recently had a reply to a question I asked about daily headache at the top of my head. I've had this headache for the past few weeks and along with this have had some minor involuntary muscle jerking, mainly at bed time as I do not really notice or have many throughout the day. I have had a neurological examination which the doctor said everything seems fine. I have also had blood work and urine test done which were also normal. The doctor could not notice any swelling when she looked into my eyes but I have not had a ct or mri scan done. I have also had a few spells of light headedness. The headaches are often in the same spot but also I have had them in other areas along with the top of my head. The headaches are not so bad that they stop me doing anything but are almost constant at the moment. They do not get worse with bending or coughing etc. But I'm just worried as I fear a brain tumour. The other doctors attribute my symptoms to stress and anxiety. I have a lot of caffeinated drinks and do not drink as much water as I probably should. I have had no visual disturbances and no mood swings or irritability but in the last week have noted a mild nausea on a few occasions. What I wish to know is whether you also believe my symptoms are anxiety related. I have been through a few traumatic events in the last few months. Should I be worried? Many thanks for your time. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Definitely not tumor.Donot panic.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving a wonderful and detailed history about your current complaints.

I shall do a CT brain due to the recent spells of light headedness and non-specific symptoms.I would do this investigation only to rule out other conditions causing headache(space occupying lesions) which might be masked/subclinical and hard to diagnose depending on your symptoms.

Caffeine relieves headache but too much of caffeine(>200mg/day) about 2 regular cups of coffee cause headache and irritability.

Brain tumors are quite rare.Do not panic.

Would also like to know some more information.
Are you a professional? If yes, what is nature of your work?
Have you experienced similar headache during holidays/weekends especially when you donot work?
Does your headache resume on Monday when you again go back to work?

Awaiting your reply.
Hope this answers your query.

Hi I did write a reply but lost it somehow! I do not work, I am a stay at home mum of children five and six years so the weekends and holidays are much the same as the rest of the week. My doctor has asked me to try to avoid stress and anxiety and she believes my symptoms will decrease, she has told me to return in one month if the symptoms are still present. Do you feel that it is safe to wait this long? I notice I do often get these headaches late afternoon and early evening's. Do you think it is possible that my condition is down to anxiety? Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Stress relaxation techniques.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.Thanks for writing me back.

So, this clearly rules out Office headache. If you feel that your headache is constant I were also advise to reduce your anxiety/stress.

I suggest few stress relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, walking/stretching exercises and deep breathing techniques till you meet your doctor.

If you donot see any change in the frequency/intensity of headache then I were to do CT brain as discussed earlier.

Hope this answers your query.Get well soon.
