Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: I am into the third day of taking 300mg of trimethoprim prescribed for a UTI. The UTI symptoms have abated but am left with a headache, aching muscles, increased pulse rate, no appetite and nausea. Is this a normal reaction to this antibiotic? I am allergic to penicillin.

Brief Answer:
possible viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:.
1. Symptoms are not related to trimethoprim.
2. Appears to be possible symptoms of additional viral infection.
3. Not to worry. Paracetamol and good hydration will improve symptoms. Take rest and plenty of fluids.
4. As the urine symptoms have improved, no need to change antibiotics, continue and complete the course.
5. Viral infection can be present for around a week, take symptomatic treatment.

Due to reduced immunity and stress, viral infection might have started, not to worry.

Get a urine test after completion of antibiotics.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
