What Causes Glands Enlargement Under The Jaw?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: Hi...I have a 16 year old son who is having an issue with swollen glands under his jaw near his chin and a few that are closer to his neck. He is going through puberty and is scared that it might be cancer. I am arranging for him to get a physical soon with a new primary care physician. He has been periodically sick from time to time but nothing more than a mild sore throat or head cold. I believe that it is related to the puberty and all the hormonal changes that he is experiencing. Your thoughts? Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Glands enlargement not related to puberty

Detailed Answer:
Hi....glands enlargement under the jaw is not related to puberty or hormones.

I have a few questions -

1. Is there chronic or recurrent fever off late?
2. Is there significant weight loss or loss of appetite?
3. Is he pale or has anemia?
4. Does he have any abdominal distension?
5. Are there any enlarged glands anywhere else like arm pits/ groins lateral part of neck etc?
6. Are there any limb pains?
7. Is he becoming exhausted very soon?

Brief Answer:
Please do not worry - may be insignificant swellin

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I have gone through the history points you have provided. I don't think you need to worry as this seems like an insignificant lymphadenopathy to me.

But I suggest you see your primary care physician for direct clinical examination.
