What Causes Fever, Chills And Headache While Treating Prostatitis?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: Hello

I have been diagnosed with prostatitis by my doctor after feeling pain in my testicles and explaining to him the symptoms. He really didn't examine me. He put me on a 1 month course of sulfatrim. I've been taking it for 15 days now and the pain slightly reduced but it's still there. A couple of days ago my throat started hurting me and I starting feeling tired. Yesterday I got a fever with chills and a headache. I was very tired and powerless. It feels like a virus or flu. Could I have contracted something else or could this be more serious and related to my previous diagnosis? I'm just afraid he diagnosed me wrong.

Brief Answer:
Strongly disagree with your doctor and his methods

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. First of all, sulfatrim is too strong an antibiotic to prescribe any individual without any examination and confirmation of a diagnosis. Next, diagnosing a patient with prostatitis without an evaluation, without investigations, without any such supporting factors is not only considered medical negligence but also shows a poor attitude your doctor seems to be having.

I am in complete disagreement with your doctor and would urge you to visit another doctor for a urine analysis, urine culture and sensitivity examination, digital rectal examination and an ultrasound of your abdomen and pelvis (optional). Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can treat your accordingly.

Your new symptoms of throat pain seem to be a side effect of sulfatrim. The chills, tired feeling and headache seem to be due to the urine infection (which I am suspecting you have). At this point I would recommend a high intake of fluids to avoid dehydration and also most of the symptoms you are experiencing.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me anytime, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply. If I do have a Urine infection won't the sulfatrim have taken care of it? I've been on it for 15 days. I will go to another doctor for tests.

Also is it possible that I have a flu or virus? Because that's how my symptoms feel.

Brief Answer:
Queries addressed sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

There is a possibility of being resistant to the sulfatrim, which is why you may not be responding to the antibiotics. Yes, please do visit another doctor. And rule out UTIs, renal stones, prostate abnormalities, etc.

Urinary tract infections can resemble symptoms of a flu or virus with symptoms like chills, feeling cold all the time, tired, lethargic, etc.

Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

will tests show any results since I am already on Sulfatrim?

Brief Answer:
Good question sir; explained for you

Detailed Answer:
Hi sir.

If the tests report an infection, then the sulfatrim is clearly not working for you. But if they show no infection, then you may have to be patient for a little longer as the sulfatrim may be working and may require some more time to show its effect.

Hope this helps sir.

Best wishes. :)

Hello Dr XXXXXXX

As you suggested I went back to the doctor and told him about my fever and my new throat pain. He examined my throat and said I had throat inflammation and said I probably had an infection. I was two weeks in on my sulfatrim so he told me to stop sulfatrim and he prescribed a two week course of Cipro 500 mg. He said the cipro will keep taking care of the prostatitis and will also help with the new infection.

I told him I wanted to get tested because I wasn't comfortable with his diagnosis of prostatitis. I went this morning and took all the tests, urine and blood. He told me to only take Cipro after I do the tests. Hopefully results will show tomorrow.

So today I started cipro. I've had fever and chills for 3 days and tomorrow will be the fourth. I don't feel good. When should I get relief from cipro? Any way to manage the fever and chills? When should I go back to the doctor?

ie: The pain in my testicles has reduced so maybe the diagnosis of prostatitis is correct?

Thank You

Brief Answer:
I'm glad you are feeling better

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

I am glad you could manage to get a doctors appointment at such short notice.

The ciprofloxacin should start showing its effect within about 48 hours after which you either report to me about your condition and I will guide you through the way forward or report to your doctor directly.

The chills and fever are symptoms and will only last as long as the infection is present. If the antibiotics work, then the chills and fever should subside. Although, the chills in my opinion should be related to your urinary tract and not the throat. So if sulfatrim did work, then your chills should have subsided as well.

It is possible that your doctors diagnosis was correct, but I do not agree with his method of shooting a dart in the dark. Your diagnosis can easily be a urinary tract infection, epididymitis, etc.

You should re-visit your doctor once the expected tests results are out.

Best wishes sir.
