default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: My 84 year old mother had a minor heart attack secondary to stress from extreme dehydration. Tests show no heart ddisease and her blood pressure typically runs around 110/88. She was prescribed metroprolol 25 msg once a day and started on 12/30. Today she was extremely fatigued and had slight swollen feet. Since being prescribed this med,(she takes no others), she has gotten increasingly tired. She'll see a doctor tomorrow but what are your thoughts about this med given the above description?

Brief Answer:
Metoprolo is not required and can be a cause of extreme fatigue and malaise

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Firstly thanks for choosing health care magic for your query!

You have written your mother had a minor heart attack and her tests showed no heart disease .
Please be more specific what are the tests that were done .
To rule out cardiac disease or to make a diagnosis of heart attack ,Few basic tests of cardiology like ecg,2d echo, tread mill tests have to be done,Infact to get a complete clearance from cardiac side angiogram or stress thallium should be done.

Her blood pressure is 110/88mm of hg ,Then why was metoprolol prescribed. If she has no cardiac problem(as said by you),metoprolol is not required,Extreme fatigue can be because of metoprolol as her blood pressure was already on lower side and metoprolol has further lowered it.
Swelling in foot can be because of congestive cardiac failure.

I would request you to kindly repost your question with photocopies of all the tests done on her along with all her ecg's and discharge slips given by hospital .

Waiting!

Thank you,
