What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 May 2016
Question: I am a male who just recently met a girl that i like a lot. before i met her i was always getting erections and never had a problem with my sex life. Ever since i met this girl i feel as though I may have anxiety over being able to perform in bed when the time comes. I feel nervous pretty often and have not been able to get an erection lately. Is this a psychological effect or is it something physical? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for submitting your question.

The symptoms you describe sound very consistent with anxiety induced performance dysfunction. This is a very commonly reported in many many healthy males and females. Given your age and no other reported history of inability or dysfunction, it would be very reasonable to speculate that this is related to the intense feelings and resulting anxiety you described. Overcoming the anxiety will be important to a healthy, mutual sexual relationship; this may take a little time and it's important not to pressure yourself or feel negatively about yourself. If the symptoms persist, you may consider speaking with your physician in person to address your concerns.

I hope this was helpful and hope this will help ease your anxiety.

I have also not been waking up with erections as often. Is there a possibility that I'm going through anxiety in my sleep that causes this?

Detailed Answer:
Anxiety can affect us even while we are not awake. Have you noticed more disturbing dreams or less restful sleep? It is very possible the anxiety is contributing to these changes and possibly other changes you might not even notice. It may not hurt to consult with your primary care physician to address your concerns regarding your sexual function as well as your feelings about these issues. This way, you may feel
more at ease about your overall state of health and hopefully find reassurance in this. Also, it may help to speak with your partner at an appropriate time and at your comfort level about your concerns. You may find reassurance in this also. I hope this helps you step in the right direction toward feeling better.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
