Brief Answer:
Epiglottal incompetence

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare Magic and thanks for putting up the query
Inability of the epiglottis to close completely can be due to laryngeal paralysis or an age related change. You should get an endoscopic examination of the larynx done to rule out any accompanying vocal cord pathology. it can be a result of some cerebrovascular episode also. So it should be investigated.
You should try to take fluids and semisolids in a semi reclined position. This helps in preventing aspiration.
In case of excessive aspiration, patients are advised nasogastric feeding tube insertion.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Take care
Thanks and regards
