Hi, I've had a sore throat for about 10 days now, and the sides of the back of my throat (tonsils?) have been swelling a bit and forming white spots. Parts of my throat are also coated white-ish but I can't get at it with anything to scrape it off because of my gag reflex. My tongue is coated light yellow and it won't go away no matter how much I rinse my mouth out and brush my teeth. I have a consistent headache as well. What I am most concerned about though is this giant white thing that's been sticking up the back of my throat for the past few days. Its shaped like a square and I'm assuming it's my epiglottis but I'm not entirely sure. I want to know whether I should go get this checked out or not by a doctor. Thank you.

I just got out of the hospital with aspirational pneumonia. It was caused a few days after I had two neck fusions. The swelling from surgery and agitation from a five hour breathing tube resulted in my having trouble swallowing. My question is, how does the larynx keep food from going down the trachea? I'm on a very soft diet right now but am still very concerned about a recurrence.

Hello,
My epiglottis drives me nuts. i take already one week medication for stomach reflux Panto 40 and nothing . It keeps going away for a few hours and then comes back . i feel like epiglottis is of his hinges ?
it started after a strange spot pain in the left back of my throat which lasted 10 days(like some virus) , after that i woke up with funny feeling of my epiglottis touching the sides of my throat.
I eat lemon a lot. not now since i take a medication. i have no any allergies. overall my health is good. Im 55

I had very bad pains in my chest 2 month ago and they come back every week or two and even in the last two days and i am on a died and taking Panto. i do not eat any citruses, only one cafe a day ,no tea, no bubble drinks.
Doctors do believe its stomach reflux and maybe it is so however I believe that my epiglottis is more then this because after one week of taking Panto tablets there are no any changes .
My heart was checked by specialist . all good.
my throat was checked by specialists with camera after and i told them all I told you. from that moment i take Panto.it was actually Somac but pharmacist gave me Panto instead.
Thank you XXXXXXX

Hi,
A few weeks ago I got sick...soar throats fatigue and aches...my son had something similar so I figured I would get over it like he did. I snowballed into a respiratory infection, ear infection and pink eye. The doctor put me on Steroids and amoxicillin. I finished both drugs and still had a tenderness in my throat. I stuck my finger in the back of my throats and felt a bump on my epiglottis. I freaked out and went on WebMD...which scared me even more. I started salt water gargles and stopped drinking any alcohol. I do not smoke and have never smoked. Could i have cut my epiglottis while swallowing? I am trying to get into an ENT. I do not drink everyday and when I do it is 2 glasses of wine at most. The bump is near the top and it feels smooth behind it...I can only do this once before gagging. I also have had a lot of acid reflux and stopped drinking coffee and pop and am drinking only water and tea. Any ideas or suggestions?

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Please continue gargles

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Firstly of all relax!! don't get too worked up!! I am sure it will be a small issue. Considering the fact that you don't smoke and drink only occasionally, there is nothing to worry!!

The swelling you are feeling may either be a cyst on...

I'm male, 23 -6,4" and currently weigh 180. My epiglottis is paralyzed due to a possible weight lifting spinal injury 2 years ago. My neurologist thought it may be Parsons XXXXXXX Syndrome back then. At that time I weighed 205, was a non-smoker and a very healthy eater in great physical shape. My medical team consists of a neurologist, ENT Doctor, and a speech therapist. Initially, I had choking fits, coughed up huge amounts of mucus, lost 45lbs., my left arm atrophied, and I couldn't swallow food. In the first three months I found a way to swallow using copious amounts of fluids to wash food down. My ENT Doctor cannot believe I haven't died of pneumonia. I still cough up a lot of mucus every day. Recent test with dyed pudding shows the pudding seeping into my lungs. I'm at a loss at what my medical condition is called? I need to know what specialist's/team of doctors I should consult for my illness. I can't find much information on paralysis of the epiglottis. Are there any specialist who've dealt with this issue, and where or what institutions are they located? Is surgery an option for me?

surgery- last resort.

hi, the other night I was at a fireworks show and i noticed a lump in my throat, right behind my throat. i thought it was a bug, so i drank water and it didn t go away so i forgot about it. I woke up with chills and possibly a fever, so i slept in. I was on the computer talking to my friend on facebook then i started to have breathing problems, and i feel dizzy. i looked up a diagram of mouth and throat to see if there was something that is located behind the tongue. i googled epiglottis. and a lot came up for epiglottitis. it said it was fatal. so i m really worried. I am wanting to go to the emergency room. but my family says i don t need to. what do i do?

Hi, For several months now I have been getting all manner of food caught in the pocket below my tongue and epiglottis. I have not changed any of my swallowing habits and I am very healthy, but this is scary and extremely uncomfortable. I ve had 3 ER visits to dislodge food caught there when it won t pass on its own, which is usually after hours. Any suggestions for treatment or what might be causing my sudden swallowing problems?

Hi, Our 9 year old granddaughter has had 5 ER visits and was flown to Anchorage. She is now home but… This started about a month ago, their whole family had a doctor’s visit all having strep throat. The morning of the visit she started having a small whistle noise when breathing although she showed no distress of not getting enough air. But by the time she reached the doctor’s office it was getting worse. The doctors did a quick check and said she needed to go to the ER. At the hospital she was in full Stridor, they gave a breathing treatment and took x-rays. The x-ray showed an hour glass shape of her airway with swelling around the airway. Epiglottis looked fine they said. She spent the night in the hospital given antibiotics, doc said tonsillitis . Within the next 7 days she had a total of 4 ER visits and 3 nights in the hospital. Steroids and breathing treatments did seem to help. She was treated for croup. Day 8 she had a follow up doc appointment aDoes nd at that she had a full blown attack. Very bad Stridor, could not get enough air but always o2 was at 100%. She was sent to anchorage there they ran tests checked her throat and said it was vocal cord dysfunction, although the test was not done during an attack.. We have been trying to learn how to breathing differently. But now the attacks are different, they are more like charley horse cramping in the throat, spasms that last about a minute quit a minute and go on for an hour to an hour and a half. Very painful for her. Also we have to watch that her does not panic and hyperventilate. From our reach it feels like there is more than one thing going on, Does this charley horse spasms sound like it is vocal cord dysfunction?
