Question: My SGPT is 69.88 & SGOT is 48.2 at present
History: A month back done l f t, total bilrubin was 1.7, that time sgot & sgpt r normal, I followed ayurvedic now bilrubin is 0.6. But sgot & sgpt r elevated. Since one month not took alcohol, before that I took daily 90 ml of Viscky, I am not heavy drinker but regular smoker.
Also had abdomen ultrasound a month back, found normal. since last month following diet of nil oil, less salt & spicy, no fatty food. only thing is not doing any physical exercise. do I consult any local Dr. for my elevated sgpt(69.88) & sgot(48.2) ? if yes suggest the specialist like gen medicines or any other. these parameters r very high r not?

Is there any problem if I take little drinks (60-90ml)

Brief Answer:
Please control drinking and do SGPT and SGOT test after 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Mild fluctuations in SGPT and SGOT is not a serious concern. These are liver enzymes and usually within normal range. However, it might be slightly above normal after taking the ayurvedic preparation. Since you are following a strict diet therefore it is likely that the test will be normal after 3 weeks and you might do the test again. There is no need to consult doctor right now for mildly elevated SGPT and SGOT.

2. Please get your lipid profile test done and if there is high cholesterol then discuss with cardiologist. Since bilirubin has come back to normal, you might discuss with your doctor if you should stop taking the ayurvedic medicine.

3. Ultrasound scan abdomen is normal and this shows that liver is normal in appearance.

4. Instead of physical exercise, you might practice yoga for 30 minutes every day.

5. Drinking 60 to 90 ml alcohol in whiskey daily is not a good choice. One unit of alcohol is there in 25 ml whisky. Daily drinking is not recommended and you should not drink on at least 2 days in a week.

6. It is recommended that a man should drink no more than four units on any day, a maximum of 12 drinks in any week. This means you should drink 300 ml in a week spread over 5 days in a week or 60 ml on each of five days a week and never more than that. This is the upper limit for drinking.

7. However if you can control your drinking better that that will help protect your liver from developing problems.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. If you cannot stay away from alcohol then please drink 60 ml whisky twice a week and get tested for SGPT and SGOT after 3 weeks.

2. This will tell if your liver function might compensate for alcohol drinking.

3. If the liver test shows higher level after 3 weeks then you might have to avoid alcohol completely except small amount during social party.

Hope your query is answered.
