What Causes Ear Pressure?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I am a 58 yo female. I felt ear pressure, probably caused by blowing my nose, but I can't determine why the pain started. I do have a deviated septum. Three hours after pain started, I realized when I touched my ear canal with my finger, that there was blood. There are no symptoms of infection. I still feel discomfort, but no vertigo. I have hearing loss, and when I talk there appears to be slight feedback. What am I dealing with?

Brief Answer:
eustachian catarrah.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.
In my opinion, you might be having eustachian tube dysfunction caused secondarily because of deviated septum. This can cause blocked ears, ear pain, ear pressure, echoing of our words, reduced hearing.

Euastachian tube dysfunction is a condition diagnosed clinically. Therefore I will urge you to see a doctor for clinical examination. Following clinical examination, you can be started on antihistamines + decongestant tablet twice daily for 5 to 7 days along with decongestant nasal drops.

The blood drops are not going to harm you. So do not be worried. Until then valsalva exercises such as chewing a gum/blowing a balloon also will be helpful.

Audiometry and tympanometry testing for yours ear and to confirm the et dysfunction.

If the symptoms are very frequent, then I would advise you to consult with the ent specialist and get the nasal septum deviation corrected by doing surgery.
You can consult the doctor and discuss my view with him.

Hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.
