What Causes Dyspnea And Rapid Heartbeat After Walking In A Heart Patient?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 May 2016
Question: Hello Dr. Rynne. My husband is a quintuple bypass patient ( they put in an extra veins ) in 1997. He has had two heart attacks prior to that surgery. He is also diabetic. He is on insulin and takes care of himself. He is 63 years old. We are staying here in XXXXXXX for the season. In the past two week, he has become short of breath and has a rapid heartbeat after walking for awhile on the beach and in downtown PUnta Gorda. We are going to the ER nearby tomorrow since his heartbeat has normalized later on today. Today he could only walk about 1/8 mile slowly before the heartbeat ramped up and he became worried. We walked home very slowly. What should we ask about at the ER tomorrow ? He is on Symbastatin, Diovan, Glucophage, Levomir, and hydrochlorothiazide. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Ask if his heart is failing!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your husband experienced. I have reviewed your information fully and difficulties walking a significant distance in someone with a past history of heart issues certainly raises the questions about the possibility of a failing heart. I will like that you ask his doctors specifically about this and ensure that he’s investigated appropriately for this as well. Keep me posted after the visit.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
