What Causes Delay In Menstruation?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Nov 2014
Question: Hello Doctor.
There's a delay of 13 days in my periods. I have done home pregnancy test 4 times now. And the last one was done today itself. I was asked to wait for a week when there was a delay of 6 days. Nothing is happening. I am not feeling anything unusual in my body. What could it be? Is it something serious?

Brief Answer:
Your problem need evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern, though.

There are so many causes for delayed menses apart from pregnancy like PCOD, hormonal imbalance, thyroid disorder, infection, contraceptive pills, stress, overweight, underweight and excessive exercise.

In your case may be, your cycle is most probably anovulatory which is really common at your age.

As your pregnancy test is negative after 13 days the chances of pregnancy are not there in your case.

Then you should consult a gynecologist and get yourself examined and investigation done to rule out the cause.

Please do not get stressed (it will further delay your period).

Choose a healthy and balanced diet and do some yoga and exercise to regulate your menses.

Please use some regular method of contraceptive method in future.

Good luck.

So should I wait some more days for my menses?
Or get myself evaluated as soon as possible?
I hope it isnt serious because I have never experienced this much delay ever. It was hardly a day or two.

Brief Answer:
You can wait for a few more days(6-7).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you again though.

Yes! You can wait for 6-7 days more, if your period will not resume then you should go for gynecologist consultation.

I guess there is no serious issue as such.

Hope it is useful.

Good luck.
