Question: Hello doctor,

My son is 2 months old. Till now he use to pass stool regularly i.e. at frequency of approx 3-4 times daily. He generally urinates more. However since 3 days, he has not passed stool. I am giving him gripe water regularly , 2 times a day. Further, he has lot of flatulence also. As such, he does not cry in pain..however, I wonder why he has suddently stopped passing stool. His urination is regular. What could be reason for this? Any medication suggested? He is on complete breast feeding.

Brief Answer:
It is normal, do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on HealthCareMagic. Let me assure you that for a baby of this age passing stool one in 10 days is equally normal as passing stool 10 times a day. So just do not worry about it. Exclusive breast milk is advisable and best continue it as you usually do. No need of gripe water if the child is not irritable. A regular frequency of urine indicates that the feeds are adequate and you just need to continue with it. Do not bother about the flatulence. It is due to the normal intestinal bacteria degrading the undigested food matter. Be careful to burp the baby after each feed. That is all you need to relax as things are normal. In case the baby does not pass stool in several days subsequently or if there is abdominal distension, all that needs to be done is to give a P-enema or glycerine suppository but I do not think that would be needed.
