What Causes Coughing, Choking And Throat Pain After Swallowing A Chicken Bone?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Jun 2014
Question: I think I swallowed a chicken bone or something sharp at dinner because it went down very sharply. No pain immediately..but later that night I was coughing like choking and had sudden pain in my lower throat area. When I push on this side of my neck and swallow there is no pain. Prior to this I did have problems with my stomach/bowels. My stomach was cramping on and off and my bowels were not regular. I eat a heavy spicy breakfast and worked out with a restriction waist band hoping to eliminate the fat from that meal. Is this all a coincidence? Or did that sharp object I swallowed get lodged in my throat and is this temporary swallow pain instead of GERD. Lastly, I have been prescribed emperazole. In the morning when the medicine wears off my throat hurts when I swallow. Is this normal? The pain wakes me up in the morning now and I did not have any of this before I swallowed that bone. I am scheduled for a Barrium Swallow test if the pain does not go away in 2 weeks. I think I want to push this test up to 1 week.

Brief Answer:
U need an UGI endoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

Thanks for contacting HealthcareMagic,

The symptoms you have been describing can be because of GERD as well as lodgement of this foreign body in throat or upper esophagus. Since you did not have these symptoms before, most likely this bone is the cause of your symptoms.

A barium swallow will be useless in your case, as it will probably not reveal anything. In my opinion you need an upper GI endoscopy at the earliest. A good ENT examination of throat may also be needed in addition to endoscopy.

Best wishes,
