What Causes Constipation While On Cobadex And Ventab?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: I used to have some backpain a few days back, which lead to numbness in lower elbow(left arm) and left leg. I consulted a doctor and he prescribed me maxgabn and ventab. I am taking these medicines + cobadex(B12 supplement) from past one week.

My question is, I am facing constipation from past one week(I suspect its due to the medicines). I tried all home remedies(isabgol husk, drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of food) to relieve myself but there is no progress. What to do now? Is there some effective medicine that you can recommend for constipation? It has started taking a toll on me as I am feeling weak and dizzy today.

Brief Answer:
Either reduce MaxGabN dose or replace it with OxCarbazepine.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

1. Indeed, "MaxGabN", the medication that you have been prescribed is known to cause constipation.

2. The other medicine "Ventab" is not probably responsible for your constipation.

3. You have not mentioned the dose, (for example 75mg) of "MaxGabN" that you are taking. This is important. Please write back mentioning the dose, that you are taking. I would also kindly like you to mention your approximate weight. Any drug is given keeping a persons weight in mind.

4. Thus we have 2 options.

Option 1: Reduce MaxBanN dose.
Option 2: Replace MaxGabN with another drug.

If I were to personally replace MaxGabN with another drug, I would choose OxCarbazepine based on my experience. It is an anti convulsant and I would choose it because we can adjust the dose easily to give you relief and avoid and evade side effects such as headaches. All drugs have side effects.

Your next choice is "Gabapentin" I would still recommend OxCarbazepine.

Thus I have answered your questions.

Brief Answer:
Kindly visit your doctor oxcarbazepine dosing.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

1. Kindly reduce the dose of Maxgabn. You need a discussion with the doctor who gave you this medication to do this.
2. Kindly discuss the drug Oxcarbazepine with your doctor. This a very good medicine for your neuropathic pains. Adjust the dose to handle side effects such as headaches.
3. Take these 2 actions. This will solve your problem.

Brief Answer:
Why not try Liquid paraffin?

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

1. You have tried most of the important lifestyle/non chemical alternatives for constipation.
2. You have the option of trying Liquid paraffin. It is called "Cremaffin". This does not require a prescription. It merely lubricates the bowel. It is effective. It will help you.
3. I would strongly advise against trying bisacodyl for constipation. It is too harsh, and is known to be habit forming in the long run.
4. Perhaps you might want to try cremaffin.

Is there any side effect of Cremaffin?? What is the dosage for the same? I guess it is a syrup right?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Neel Kudchadkar (30 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
A table spoon of Cremaffin is sufficient and effective in most cases.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

1. Cremaffin usually does not have side effects associated with other laxatives. It is safe. You might want to try it.
2. The dosage is in tablespoons. A tablespoon a day should be sufficient.
3. Cremaffin is more correctly called as a suspension of paraffin.

Kindly try the same.

Dr. Neel Kudchadkar
