What Causes Constipation After Giving Calcimax To Infant?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: I have a newborn baby who is born on Jan-1st. He is healthy baby with everything normal as per pediatrician.

We started him on Calcimax-p 200ml bt Meyer organics syrup as per doctors advice since yesterday - Jan-4th.

Since then the baby has not gone potty. He urinates normal. Yesterday morning he passed normal color stools and since then no stools are passed except for 2 dots today.

Would like to know if this is normal? Is this caused by calcimax syrup? How long we should wait if baby does not pass stools?

Your help is appreciated.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
it is normal. Wait for upto 5 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
It is pretty normal for babies at this age to pass stools once in 3 to 5 days.
It may not be related to Calcimax.

The reason is that in the first few days digestion ability of newborn gut is less and this capacity increases with good bacteria colonization. This takes a week and after that milk swallowed is easily digested and most of it is absorbed into baby's body. As the only diet is milk the stools wouldn't be able to fully form every day.

In short don't worry. Even if your baby passes once in 5 days it is normal provided baby is otherwise well and feeding normally with good urine output.

Continue breastfeeding frequently. Mother needs to take plenty of liquids and milk and juices.
If your baby is active cheerful and feeding well and sleeping between feeds don't worry.

Continue supplements as advised by your doctor.
Wishing your baby good health

He is formula fed ( Enfamil) via bottle. He passes gas frequently. I hope there is no reason to worry.
