What Causes Constant Abdominal Bloating After A Meal?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Dec 2016
Question: My upper abdominal area (just below the rib cage) is constantly bloated. It used to happen only after eating, but lately it is bloated even in the morning prior to consuming any food. I have recently dramatically reduced my caloric intake (my goal is less than 1200 calories/per day. I weigh approx 175 lbs), and have increase the intensity of my workouts, to see if it that would help. It hasn't. I have lost some weight and my arms and legs have responded, i.e., more development and more cut, but I still look fat due to the distension. Could it possibly be my liver? I do have a hialtal hernia and therefore originally thought it was my stomach. Any guidelines in regard to what I should have tested? (I am going for my semi annual check up shortly.) Thank you. PS-it is not just aesthetics, it can be uncomfortable.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking on HCM!

I read carefully all your concern and I can say as follows:
1. You are reporting to have had bloating after eating and you have loosed weight too.
These symptoms may be related with :
- stomach issues like gastritis
- gallbladder/ pancreatic issues.
2.This is why to my opinion you should do below exams:
- abdominal ultrasound
- upper endoscopy
- blood work
- liver profile liek AST ,ALT, GGT
- amilazemia.
3. With regards to hiatal hernia. It may mimic your symptoms but usually it is associated with chest burning feeling.
Your symptoms doesn't seems to be typical for liver issues. Otherwise liver panel test will help you to rule out liver issues.

4. Meantime I suggest to :
- use plenty of water
- avoid fatty foods
- avoid beans, broccoli
- use simethicone
- increase physical activity
- avoid unnecessary stress.
Hope it was helpful to you!
