Question: A week ago Thursday I had a Hydrocele repair. The last few days I've had a clear discharge from the sutures. Is this cause for worry?

Brief Answer:
If the quantity is very minimal and just coming from the sutures, this may be just a local reaction to the suture material and will heal on its own.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/57 - on antibiotic - hydrocele surgery last Thursday - clear discharge from sutures for last few days - wants to know is this is a cause of worry...

Ideally such a thing does not occur as discharge of clear fluid from sutures.
Worry will depend upon some factors like:
The quantity of the discharge.
Any skin infection or so?
Any other symptoms if you have.

If the quantity is very minimal and just coming from the sutures, this may be just a local reaction to the suture material and will heal on its own.

If the quantity is more, needing to change the dressing or pads, it may indicate a leak from the hydrocele sac, the skin not absorbing and needs evaluation and further treatment in the form of an antibiotic to cover for anticipated infection, anti-inflammatory medicines; wait and watch policy at the moment and need for exploration if needed.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Discharge was quite heavy last night. It was enough that it soaked my underpants almost to the point that you might have thought that I urinated a little in my sleep. I don't want to pay for an emergency room so I believe that I will wait till Monday and see my GP. That is if there is no pain or signs of infection. Does that sound like a good plan of action?

Yes, indeed.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back to HCM

Absolutely yes, that is what I discussed in the first answer.

On a safer side, please use liquid povidone iodine to be applied all over the scrotal area as it sterilizes the skin.

Use large certainly see your GP n Monday if there is no evidence of infection.

Please go ahead at the moment as you have planned.
Take care.
