What Causes Chronic Insomnia While Diagnosed With An Elevated TSH Level In Blood?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Feb 2016
Question: I went to doctor about a month ago and got my blood results back. Some levels were abnormal but the doctor did not see it as a concern. My MCV was abnormally high and MCHC abnormally low. What I am more concerned about is my tsh reflex levels. My t4 and t3 are normal, but tsh reflex was abnormally high. I do feel fatigued during the day but wired and restless at night. I have had chronic insomnia for years, but it has seemed to worsen over the last few months. I do take medication in the early morning for adult adhd but havnt noticed any side effects concerning my sleep and health. I noticed when I quit Yaz birth control about 8 months ago. Since then, no matter how much I eat I lose weight (not enough to worry over). I usually take in 1700 - 1900 calories and weigh 106. But over the last couple months, my appetite has increased and I can easily take in 2500+ calories, and then lose a couple pounds. I now weigh 96. At time times I get really hot and muscles tense up, I am anxious, and I have brain fog. Also, the "female week" has went from lasting up to 4 days a week to now over 2 weeks each month. With all that being said, should any of this relate to the mcv, mchc and tsh results? And if so, would getting off birth control (which has been 8 months ago) be a possible reason?

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note your symptoms. They are bothersome enough for you to seek direct medical care from a physician, who will have the opportunity to examine you in-person.

An elevated TSH can cause excessive bleeding during menstrual cycles. However, this is generally seen when the TSH is quit high particularly when the Free or Total T4 and Total T3 are low. With milder degrees of TSH elevation, it is unlikely to occur.
Your MCV and MCHC can be affected by a thyroid problem and the blood loss due to prolonged periods.

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC
Electrolytes
Calcium
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests
Kidney function tests
TSH
Free T4
anti TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase) antibodies
anti Thyroglobulin antibodies
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
