What Causes Burping While Eating Food?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: I currently take protonix 2 times a day for esophagitis and gastritis (the past 3 months). I had an endoscopy done already. I do feel much better but unfortunately no matter what I eat I feel the need to burp, which brings up non acid reflux to my throat which causes constant throat clearing and congestion. I cannot burp normal anymore. Could the medicine bring on this effect of not properly digesting my food?? Will this go away with continued use of protonix if I don't burp I have no problems and it only happens when I'm standing. Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

What you do suffer from is called aerophagia. Due to some factors you swallow the air. It may be caused by too fast eating, stress, nervousness, chewing gum, smoking, loose dentures or drinking carbonated drinks. This has nothing to do with food digestion. Please note that the digestion only start in the stomach and is continued through duodenum and whole small intestine. In case of bad digestion you can get undigested foods in the stool.
I suggest you to try eliminate mentioned factors. If this wont help, you should consult gastroenterolgist. Stomach emptying test should be performed.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you that doesn't sound too serious. Is the burping up the non acid reflux causing damage? I probably should see a doctor about the nervousness. I do have bad anxiety. I thought it might be LPR but giving it only happens when I burp, aerophagia makes sense.

Detailed Answer:
Non acid reflux does not cause any problems except the discomfort which you do have. Acid is what destroys esophageal cells and can cause Baretts esophagus or inflammation. Air itself is not a destroying factor.
Nervousness is the strong factor of aerophagia. So getting rid of it should help indeed.

Brief Answer:
Protonix 20 mg 2x1 is the right treatment.

Detailed Answer:
You did get proper treatment for gastritis (Protonix 20 mg two times a day). As you do take it for 3 months, most likely the gastritis is already gone. Lack of pain indicates that.
Additionally you should take care of your diet. Please avoid fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol, coffee (very important), chocolate, orange juices. This should help in maintaining proper stomach condition.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
