Can erosive esophagitis cause tightness in the throat?

Hi, I’m female, 20 years old. 7 weeks ago I’ve been diagnosed with erosive esophagitis and erosive gastroduodenitis and have been put on 40mg of Nexium ever since. I’ve only experienced heartburn very rarely and my other symptoms include gagging and stomach contents fluxing back up. Not only that these symptoms haven’t disappeared, I’ve also started to feel tightness around my throat and my neck (like my throat is obstructed) and sometimes, when swallowing, feel either a small lump in the throat or some food being stuck onto it. Various tests have been carried out (including heart, kidneys etc.) and they all came back good, so I’m just wondering could erosive esophagitis be responsible for the feeling in my throat? Also, how long does it take for Nexium to kick in and a condition like this one to heal? I surely hoped that by following the recommendations (proper diet, avoid spicy foods, caffeine, etc) and taking the medications, the problem would start to improve after a month?

Hi.

Noted your history related to GERD, erosive gastritis and duodenitis, rare hearburn, reflux, feeling small lump in throat and so on.
It is good that Upper GI Endoscopy is done and you know the diagnosis.
Continue the precautions you have mentioned about diet, caffiene and so on.
One of the most important factors for Nexium alone not working in your case is anxiety and stress.
These two factors instigate or enhance the symptoms in spite the patient is taking Nexium.
Hence I would advise you additional medicines that you need to take after consulting your Doctors.
Domperidone to avoid the reflux.
Antacids particularly when you are empty stomach.
Medicines for anxiety or stress if needed help a lot.
Changes over anything that increase the causative factors.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
