Question: i have bee taking seroquel 300 mg for 7 months. i take 100 mg in the morning and 200 mg at night. I went to the emergency room for burning throat and chest pain especially in the morning which i have had for the last two months. I was told that the seroquel was the most probable cause of of the above and to stop taking it and it would take about two weeks to taper off but did not give me exact quidelines of how to do this. I assume that i will have to taper off 50 mg at a time. I took 150 mg last night but am not sure how many days i should wait before dropping another 50 mg. do you have any advice on how best i should do this.

Brief Answer:
generally 50 mg every week should be reduced

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

In my patients I used to decrease the dose 50 mg every week up to 100 mg.And then 25 mg per week.
So I don't think that you should stop the medicines in two weeks.

If it is confirmed that side effects are due to seroquel and I were your treating doctor I would suggest somewhat faster reduction as below in your case.

- 100 mg in morning and 150 in night for 5 days

- 100 mg in morning and 100 mg in night for 5 days

- 50 mg in morning and 100 mg in night for 5 days

- 50 mg in morning and 50 mg in night for 5 days

- 25 mg in morning and 25 mg in night for 5 days

- 25 mg in morning and no night dose for 5 days

- stop completely

In this way you can stop within a month. As you are taking other medicines and stable on them less likely possibility of any significant discontinuation symptoms. However if any time if you feel discomfort that is not tolerable consult your treating doctor for the same.

If still you want to go for faster tapering, reduce 50 mg every 3 days and you can stop in two weeks.

And please inform your treating doctor also about your tapering schedule.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Dr.Chintan Solanki.
