What Causes Brown Vertical Lines On Toe Nail?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: I have a dark vertical brown line on my one toe thumb nail. I have type 2 diabetes, taking medicines. Pic attached. I came across a web site which said: "it's fairly common to have streaks of the pigment melanin down your fingernails, but,it may occasionally indicate a form of skin cancer called subungual melanoma" Please indicate if I need to undergo some test to rule out cancer.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of Subungual melanoma.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Hi & Welcome.

I appreciate your concern for the discoloration of the nail of the left great toe.

After having gone through your problems mentioned in your query and having studied the uploaded picture which shows a dark line underneath your nail, I am of the opinion that the findings are suspicious of Subungual melanoma.

You are therefore advised to consult a dermatologist for proper evaluation and a biopsy of the lesion is required to confirm the diagnosis.

Hope to have answered your query.

Best regards.
