Question: I have been on prednizone for 9 doses following a heart catheterize. Yesterday i felt like I was going to menstruate (I have been in menopause for four years). Today there is brown discharge. My shortness of breath, but the pain in my chest is subsiding. I am also on other medications, beta blockers, cholesterol medicine, etc and nitroglycerin as needed. I also have new broken veins in my leg with a bit of burning. Is all of this normal? Will things return to normal after medication? I am type two diabetic on MetFormin.

Brief Answer:
I recommend you to perform some tests as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern I would like to explain that oral prednisone is known to cause sexual hormone imbalance in women, associated with vaginal hemorrhage (metrorrhagia) even in menopause.

But I recommend you to consult with your gynecologist and perform an abdominal ultrasound to examine better the uterus, to exclude other possible causes of metrorrhagia (like an endometrial hyperplasia for example).

I would also recommend you to perform a Doppler ultrasound of your lower limbs vessels, to exclude possible thrombi and decide if anti-coagulation therapy is needed in your situation.

Regarding your chest pain and shortness of breath these could also be side effects of prednisone. But I would like to know the results of your cardiac tests to give a second opinion and exclude the cardiac origin of these symptoms. If you could upload the results of your test, it would be of help.

I would also advise you to closely monitor your blood pressure and fasting glucose, as it is known that prednisone can induce increase of them both.

Hope to have been of help!

Feel free to ask any other questions!
