What Causes Bloody Vaginal Discharge After Taking Novelon?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Apr 2014
Question: Me and my fiancee had unprotected sex around 15 days ago. Intercourse was not complete as I ejaculated outside but she felt that some part of semen was deposited inside. Now she should menstruate as per her period but instead she is having bloody discharge (slightly sticky and watery in nature but red in color) which is very less as compared to her routine menstrual loss. Also she is not having any other signs like uterine cramps, breast swelling, nausea etc. Just after sex she took novelon and continued for 5 days. Kindly suggest what is happening and what we should do. The discharge happened for a short period of time and that too only once. She was diagnosed with ovarian cyst in Oct. 2013 for which she was put on Novelon for 3 months. Ovarian cyst got successfully removed after this treatment.

Brief Answer: Possibly because of taking Novelon. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. If her period was supposed to come now and you had intercourse 15 days ago, chances of conception are a bit high particularly because you did not use any protection like condom and your fiance feels that you ejaculated inside the vagina too. If she was using Novelon from her previous period then the chances of pregnancy would have been quite significantly low, almost nil, but since she was not taking them since the start of her previous period, chances of ovulation are quite high, and moreover you had intercourse right in the middle of the cycle when ovulation happens. Considering all this, I would suggest you to do a home pregnancy test after one week from now, it takes some time for the test to become positive, and if the test comes positive, you can decide on future course of action as per your needs. As for the scanty and watery menstrual flow, it is quite possible that Novelon is responsible for this, taking and stopping oral contraceptive pills can cause menstrual irregularities, that is not a big deal. I hope this answers your question. Regards.

Well many thanks for your kind response. I just wanted to know that should consuming novelon for 5 days will have no effect? We will surely abide by your advice of pregnancy test. If it is positive, our decision will be to abort it this time. Could you please suggest what we should do. What are the safe practices I mean the one which are non painful and in which speedy recovery is there.

Brief Answer: After fertilisation, novelon will have no effects. Detailed Answer: Hello again Mr. XXXXXXX Thanks for writing back. If the ovum gets fertilised then taking novelon will essentially have no effects and will not cause abortion, nor does it prevent fertilisation effectively if taken after intercourse. For novelon to be effective your partner should take it from the first day of her period. There are no safe practices that you can follow, if the pregnancy is confirmed then you should consult a gyneacologist for further management. In the future, always remember to use protection if you are not planning to have babies yet. I hope this answers your query. All the best.
