default
Posted on Mon, 23 May 2016
Question: Hi Doc.
Ive had bright red blood in my stool for yhe past 3 days. I feel a bit bloaty and uncomfortable and I am a bit constipated as well (low volume or erratic times).

The stool colour is notmal but has been very dry and sticky. I have had piles for a long time and have had bleeding before from time to time. I do feel a bit of a burning sensation down there as well.

I got worried because its happened 3 days in a row.

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
It needs further evalaution.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

Bright red blood stool could be indicative of bleeding from distal/terminal portion of GIT i.e. from large intestine to anus.It needs further evaluation.

In your case,if you are having a past history of piles then it could be the reason but the other causes must be ruled out by examination and relevant investigations like blood, stool and other tests.

So,I will suggest you to a see doctor (preferably surgeon) who will do clinical examination with proctoscopy and colonoscopy (if required) to rule out any other lower GIT etiologies.

Till the time,

1) Topical application of steroids (Anovate cream) with lignociane creams or ointments to reduce pain, burning and inflammation at anal region.Apply the cream around anus after each bowel motions.

2) Hot sitz bath,

3) Take Laxatives or purgatives (lie liquid looz) to have a soft and effortless stool evacuation.

4) Oral antibiotics are also needed (quinolones like ofloxacin with anti-protozoals like metronidazole or ornidazole) but you will need a prescription from the doctor.

For stomach discomfort and bloating, you can take over the counter antacids like pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily.

So,better to consult general surgeon for further evaluation.
