What Causes Blood In Eye After A Cataract Surgery?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jun 2014
Question: I had cataract surgery on the left eye on 4/22/14 & one the right eye on 5/6/14. I have blood in the right inside part of the white of my eye. I noticed it yesterday afternoon after I had been wearing my new eyeglasses for about 5 hours. It's dark red blood. I goes up & down on that side & there is a pool of blood in the lower lid. I called Marietta Eye & the eye doctor on call just said he wasn't concerned because it was in the white of my eye. He told me to just put blink in it 4 x a day & it should clear up in a few days. We have been keeping my daughters shitzu dog, but I work during the week. She went home last night. This has not happened before & we've kept her many times.

Brief Answer:
This is probably subconjunctival hemorrhage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed the history and it seems from the history that you have underwent cataract surgery on 5/6/14 and following it you are having dark red blood in the white part of the eye.
This indicates subconjunctival hemorrhage which is because of collection of blood under the conjunctiva. This is a common condition and it occurs because of minor trauma to the blood vessels during surgery because of handling of the eye tissues during surgery.
This will decrease over 1-3 weeks slowly as the blood gets absorbed, hence no need to worry. Do continue the eye drops as advised by your doctor and no need to worry about subconjunctival hemorrhage as it will resolve by itself.

If possible do send a photo of the affected eye so that I can confirm the diagnosis for you.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Thank you! I'm on the way to Marietta Eye this morning. I want them to check the prescription that Pearle vision filled for me & for them to look at my eye. I don't think I can wear the glasses because my home computer is slanted & distorted while I'm wearing those glasses & I have to look through the reader portion of the glasses to see the computer. With progressive lenses I should not have to do that. I don't have any glasses on right now & can see the screen just fine.

Brief Answer:
Distorted vision is because of cylindrical lens.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

Thank you for the follow up question.

It seems from the history that you are having distorted vision with glasses. This indicates that you are prescribed cylindrical lenses for correction of astigmatism.
The reader portion is meant for near vision and for near vision you have to look through the reader portion and to avoid this problem you have to go for progressive lenses. The progressive lenses correct for intermediate distances also unlike the conventional bifocal lenses which only correct for distance and near vision.

Hence I advice you to go for progressive lenses and to get the prescription checked before ordering the final glasses.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

I do have progressive lenses. I have worn them for years, but this is the first time wearing them after cataract surgery. I did okay with them driving to work this morning & using my work computer. There seems to be some distortion, but the guy at Pearle vision said to wear them a couple of days to see how they do and if I need to come in to have them checked they would help me. I seemed to be able to work just fine. I enjoyed not wearing glasses for 5 weeks & for a 2 weeks before that I had clear lense in the left side of my glasses after the first surgery. I am not wearing the glasses right now & I don't see any distortion. Okay I just put my glasses back on & a distortion is there as far as the slant causing the right side of the computer being wider on the right side of the screen. I can read the words fine with or without the glasses. My lenses were much stronger previous to surgery.
