Can Myopic Degeneration Lead To Vision Loss?
Question: My eye doctor said I have posterior staphyloma..does this usually progress to where I loose my sight? My power for my eyes are -10.50 and -7.60 with some astigmatism in both eyes.. They say I have degenerative myopia.. I went in to see the doctor because my floaters have greatly increased lots of cobwebs in my eyes! Driving me crazy! Will I eventually loose my sight? Anything I should stop doing? Reading? Driving? Please help me understand the condition and what will happen to my eyes..do many have this condition?

I am sorry about your problem.
with what you said I understand you have myopic degeneration. it is progressive disease and invariably lead to vision loss in most sufferers. I am not scaring you but putting facts. it is second most common cause of vision loss after cataract.
generally laser photocoagulation is done as there will be evidences of retinal detachment. so it is important to get eye check up esp retinal check for every new symptoms you experience in future. whenever they observe that macular degeneration starts they will try repairing it.
besides you should use glasses for your daily activities and that can slow down progression.

Do many people get staphyloma what causes this condition? Is this why I am having all these floaters? My problem now is that when I would get new floaters I would go to the doctor but here lately I get new floaters and flashes quite frequently .. Do I need to be going to the doctor all the time? Can this be repaired? Will I lose my sight completely..what can I do to slow it down? Should I not wear contacts .. Not read as much.. Not use the computer thanks

actually I am an practising ophthalmologist and due to technical error I had registered as family doctor. You can check my profile with educational details.
Not all staphyloma would lead to vision loss. only ones that affect macula would lead to vision loss. Since choroido retinal degeneration is progressive it would soon spread to macula. As it spreads it would cause more floaters. though more frequent floaters is not a criteria but that's how you can grade the problem.
It's unfortunate that you can't meet eye doctor quickly but you can go to ER who can put the one on call quickly.
There are several ways tried to stop progression but failed. However scleral buckling is being done temporarily to stop axial elongation of eye ball, but temporary.
I suggest to wear glasses or contacts. Reduce eye strain for longer duration. it can be any work like reading, watching screen. measure ocular pressure frequently.
regularly follow up with doctor get photocoagulation.
