Brief Answer:
urinary tract infections can cause blood in urine

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If you are noticing blood in the urine, then it could be as the urinary tract infection. This is one of the symptoms that can result from these infections and normally resolves as the infection is treated.
This blood would be seen on urination.

If you are noticing blood in your underwear, then it would need to be evaluated because it could be coming from the genital tract (uterus, cervix, tubes, ovaries).

Of particular concern would be the uterus, bleeding after menopause is most commonly related to changes in the uterus. These changes may be benign or may be cancerous.

Your doctor would likely suggest an ultrasound and also a biopsy to definitively determine the cause.

Summary: (1) if only noticing on urination then related to infection and will resolve as infection is treated
(2)if noticing staining underwear, need to evaluate genital tract for any changes

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I have traced my vaginal spotting bleeding to happening after a bowel movement....especially if I strain. Internet has pages of women complaining of similar experiences, could there be a connection?

Brief Answer:
not a common occurence

Detailed Answer:
HI

It is possible to have bleeding from the anus after straining because of superficial cuts or abrasions that occur in the area.

It is sometimes possible to assume that the anal bleeding is vaginal (particularly if a lot of blood is seen) but straining should not cause vaginal bleeding typically because the genital and gastrointestinal tract are completely separated.

Some women have a prolapse of the uterus and vagina (prolapse means that it is protruding down somewhat) and when they strain, they notice the prolapse more but this is one of the few links between straining with bowel movements and the genitalia.

it is possible that the vaginal bleeding is not associated with any significant problems, this is true for the majority of women but once it is seen, it needs to be evaluated to make sure.

Brief Answer:
depends on additional symptoms

Detailed Answer:
HI

If it is seen only when you use the bathroom, when you urinate (not in the underwear) then it is likely related to the urinary tract infection. If the other symptoms of the infection are reducing (discomfort on urination, frequency, etc) , then you can wait.

If the other urinary tract symptoms are not resolving or worsening as well, then you should go the ER for evaluation.

If you are noticing the blood in the urine and also in your underwear which means may be from the genitalia then you can consider waiting till your appointment unless you are bleeding heavy and feeling symptoms related to blood loss.

Blood loss symptoms would be dizziness, confusion, shortness of breath
