What Causes An Uncomfortable Feeling Of Fullness In The Abdomen?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Aug 2016
Question: my stomach feels full and feels like pressure and goes up right below the breast and into my throat (feeling like I need to burp)and it comes and goes and no pain at all anywhere. When I lay down or stand up it is no longer there. I am 55 and in full blown menopause. Crazy thing is if I get a hot flash the symptoms go away for a while. Only lasts about 3 days then goes away for about a month or so then returns.

Brief Answer:
may need to get this checked out

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It is true that our bodies change during menopause, however, if this has been going on for a while then it may be time to see a doctor and get a diagnosis. There are two things about what you are saying that are concerning. One is that it is positional and the other is that there is a feeling of fullness. These are not symptoms of reflux usually. The feeling of fullness and the positional nature of your symptoms may indicate some sort of blockage in the stomach.
You could try avoiding gas producing foods like dairy and beans.
You could try adding a probiotic.
You could try adding an acid blocker.
If none of these help then see your doctor, you may need some testing.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Why would something like this come and go? It comes for a few day and then I don't have any symptoms for a few months or so

Maybe I should try and stay away from the caffeine?

Brief Answer:
it is possible

Detailed Answer:
It is possible that it could come and go. Hard to know exactly why that would happen. It could have to do with your activity level or what you are eating.
Yes if you are drinking a lot of caffeine it would be good to decrease that to no more than one cup a day. Also avoiding very acidic foods, tobacco and alcohol could help.
If it persists though, see someone for an exam and testing.

So I should try what you are saying first to see if that helps? I do know that it does start up when I eat really fast and really don't chew up my food well. That is when it really bothers me.

Brief Answer:
yes, no emergency

Detailed Answer:
Try the suggestions I have given you and try to eat more slowly. If it does not completely go away then if it were me I would get it checked out.
Best to you
