Brief Answer:
Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels indicate liver or bone disorders.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, greetings! Thanks for posting your query in hcm.

Alkaline phosphatase test is primarily a liver function test, increased levels of which suggest underlying liver problems or even bone problems.

This can happen in the following situations:-

1. Hepatitis:- This is an inflammatory disorder of the liver caused by virus, environmental toxins or alcohol.

2. Biliary obstruction:- This is blockage in the tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine due to a cyst, inflammation, gallstones or injury.

3. Bone conditions:- Any conditions that increase bone activity/ affects bone growth like benign bone tumours, bone cancers, pagets disease (remodelling of bone).

4. Blood cancers (leukemia)

5. Hyperparathyroidism:- overactivity of the parathyroid gland which release hormones that affect calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.
