What Causes Abdominal Pain And Bowel Irregularities After Colorectal Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: I have asked that prior questions, so complex, be erased as I returned from Mayo with new information. I will try to download the notes from Gastroenterologist (from India) and colorectal surgeon. Perhaps, if my provider can get things rolling, this is the "hope" you talked about.
The beginning of major constipation/incontinence/pain at site of removal of colon was after hernia repair. Other issues after colorectal surgery, but, going through my notes and talking with the doctors at Mayo, I believe, if you can help me direct (as Medicare patient, provider doesn't direct - I can make appointments, but must be guided in order to give knowledgeable information, if you don't mind. I see no place to download. Perhaps when you reply.

Hello, good doctor. I' quoting colorectal surgeon from Mayo - "I am concerned that your problem lies in the "function of the GI tract - meaning how it works; however it is n to easy to say if it is all related to surgery/mesh/resection of the colon. My concern is somewhere along the line the GI tract had deviated from the normal "work." I would encourage you to see a motility specialist - a GI doctor who specifically sees patients with abdominal pain, constipation incontinence." This was written by colorectal surgeon.
The Gastroenterologist said my tests were to old and put in for me to have another MRI; I requested what I was to have specifically looked at (he arranged it for the 15th of May and I didn't feel prepared to go back without the pain in the sacrum/tailbone being addressed at same time - we didn't even discuss this) He told me to get a provider here - as you know, my provider ignored my pleas and continued with the mega drugs. You also know I quit them November 7, 2014. Since then, I pulled something on low left side of rectum and stools started falling out. I cannot lead my care any more - a provider can't possibly understand this mess. But, I will tell you that before I had hernia repair, I had nothing that caused such complications as I have now. Areas where mesh were sewn, appear to have been dislodged even though I'm told this is impossible. Nothing is impossible with me - I never had gastro issues, never, until I made the poor choice to have colorectal surgery and, explaining changes to someone who hasn't been with me from beginning, seems like a nightmare. From top of mesh to include the area where repair was done/colon removed, I have pulling and pain - I documented this so many times. I have the name of a Dr. XXXXXXX A Dar, FACG, whom I am to make an appointment but with my history, can you try to help me tell her exactly what she's to do? By the way, the Gastroenterologist I saw at Mayo was one of the finest, ;most attentive, thorough doctors I've seen; however, it was a fluke that I had incontinence at that time so I got him off track. Prior to two surgeries I had incontinece after a a lumbar injection but it never should have been a focus until the two surgeries. I'm confusing you; I'm sure. I still am adamant that the hernia repair was a big problem; my notes show that major pain/issues started after that, but what doctor will listen to me? If I need to be more clear, please forgive me for rambling. And, the main source of pain is near resection - tailbone/rectum/sacrum - something is not stable; and, if "it" moves, my nerves fire. Do you see why it is almost an impossibility to make sense of this? Trust me when I say I believe in today's world, a person who is 67 (I was 63 when I had MVA and treated for chronic pain even through both surgeries) is not treated with real concern. It's a fact. Healthcare is a business that has doctors scrambling to make ends meet; and many, don't want anyone this involved. I hope you are well. I do not think the actual colorectal surgery, with exception of where the rectum was tacked - it has fallen, but the colon, inside, appears to be ok - it's where it's under mesh and bowel goes through that i'm doubled over.
Apologize; my thoughts are scrambled. My best to you. I believe I need to get away from here where nobody wants my mess and start fresh. Blessings to you. Again, I'm as to which tests shows the area where colon removed/hernia repair and whatever is poking me near resection.

The quote from the colorectal surgeon "function in GI tract"
I know exactly when this started - the hernia repair. I have copious notes. Prior to hernia repair, I did not double over in pain; have back up; talk about constipation or incontinence to the degree I did after. My breathing was not compromised either. I was told to go to ER so many times, but, when two surgeries with complications were ignored and it's been this long, what point is there in pursuing? Nobody wants to deal with such complications as the Head of the Hospital where I left with an infection said "No doctor wants to go in and clean up another doctor's mistake." I feel beaten.

Brief Answer:
Do not get disheartened

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I am not at all confused as I have a clear picture of your events
You may go ahead and see Dr XXXXXXX In case you feel comfortable ask her to examine you clinically and make a note of the clinical examination

May be the GI surgeon you met at Mayo was right that you have a motility disorder and incontinence bit there are high probabilities that there is associated pathology involved which is causing pain in sacral area

Ask your doctor to specifically rule out sacral nerve entrapment during the rectal prolapse surgery

Yes most doctors are very choosy treating patients to keep their career graph on a rise and their image clean, but I have learnt unless you do not accept challenging cases you do not learn anything

I will just share a small story, way back in 1988 when I started my private practice, My father a business tycoon told me we do not need to earn from this hospital for our livelihood, so be rigidly ethical and use reasoning while treating humans

I approached leading doctors for their referrals and I learnt it was not very easy getting patients from them and I just told them to send me the patients which their regular surgeon refuses to operate and it worked, I have the biggest experience of handling complications of others

So do not get disheartened somewhere near by you also there will be a surgeon who has experience in handling these situations it is matter of time only that you get to know him

My good wishes for a healthy life ahead
Regards

How many years have I been writing? Now fear is instilled in me. I need a doctor (provider) I need an MRI and CT scan and I'm sick inside. After three days of what is normal passing, once it's out, I feel like I've ripped my insides out.
Good for your father. Good for you. You have had troubles of your own. I'm reaching stage of rotting. XXXXXXX doctors aren't like they once were and understandably nobody wants to deal with me. I don't handle feeling sick inside; so much movement; mesh had to be compromised; and, always, after hernia repair, I said I had pain there but, it is what it is.
Colorectal surgeon saw me before hernia repair; I had no abdominal pain; incontinence, back up; so she only did a rectal exam. Her feelings are, as I said, something not right in the GI tract and I believe whole heartedly it's the area where colon removed/hernia repaired. But, rectum mesh has slipped slightly and sitting on rectum is painful as I pulled something that started stool to fall out. Last three days, as I said BM's seemed normal but tore my insides out, not literally. I guess there is no point writing this. Thousands of miles away. You are a good man. I wish we had more here. The gastrointestinal dr at Mayo is from XXXXXXX - you seem to care about human beings. Best to you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for the kind words
It is not that there is lack of good doctors in US, it is that not body wants to mess up with issues created by others for the fear of medicolegal issues

This in itself is a separate matter let us not go in to depth of it

I would yet like someone to clinically examine you and then take a conclusive decision

Let us wait for the good day to come
Wishing you a very healthy life ahead
