What Causes A Weird Sensation After Cardio Exercises?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2015
Question: I am 53 yo female. LMC 2013. I lift weights and exercise cardio regularly. Lately I have been having episodes of feeling "off balance" not dizzy or vertigo, but feeling weird. It subsides within a few minutes, but leaves me worried and stressed. No sweating, or chest pains , just feeling weird. What do you think maybe causing this?

Brief Answer:
Transient episodes of "off-balance"

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Transient episodes of "off-balance" indicate vascular cause, more precisely transient ischemic attack involving posterior cerebral circulation or vertebro-basilar insufficiency. More often the symptoms are very brief, lasting a few seconds.
Work-up for atherosclerosis like serum lipid profile, blood sugar fasting and post prandial,ECG,Echocardiogram,X-ray cervical spines are needed to be done.
A detail neurological examination & subsequently Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to evaluate vertebrobasilar arteries,I feel should be undertaken.

Ate there any other symptoms that would give me reason to seek all those exams ?

Brief Answer:
Transient episodes of "off-balance"-work up

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Transient vertebro-basilar ischemia can give rise to other symptoms along with 'off-balance'-like nausea, vomiting ,temporary double vision ,speech problem (dysarthria).
Work-up suggested are for atherosclerosis as it is the common underlying cause of transient ischemia in brain-stem vascular territory.Except MRA,rest of the investigations are not specific.
Cardiac investigations are asked for to rule out any arrhythmias, particularly brady-arrhythmias,which can also cause transient fall in cerebral circulation-leading feeling 'off balance' or near syncope.
