Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be injury to sciatic nerve

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

The risk of injury to sciatic nerve does not depend on the length of the needle, it depends on location of giving the injection. Intra-muscular injection in gluteal region are given in peer and outer quadrant.
Accidental injection into sciatic nerve will cause shooting pain in the gluteal and back of thigh region. Numb spot could be due to inadvertent injection into subcutaneous plane. There is no reason of being worried. It will subside ever a period of time. Local application of hot water fomentation will be helpful.
I would also suggest you taking Multivitamin supplement which will also benefit.

whew! cuz its been a long while its in a muscle just above my knee on my right leg on the outside of my thigh. i don't have alot of fat should i maybee switch to a 1 in needle and maybee not even insert that completely? as far as the location from what yhou have told me is consistant with what i already know that i should IM in the upper outer quadrant of the glut and go straight in. Ive never had the pain you have described about hitting the sciatic nerve but im pretty sure ive hit veins before cuz it bleeds a bit. anyways thank you for the information. :)

Brief Answer:
Aspirate before you inject

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Puncturing the skin will cause bleeding.
Before you start injecting aspirate the syringe and check. If no blood comes into the syringe then you are not in the vein. Also you can insert the whole length of needle completely as it will ensure deep intramuscular injection. It's good to know you are so well aware of location of site of injection.
Local hot water fomentation will resolve the issue.

Take care
