What Are The Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: I have been on an SSRI (Prozac, Lexipro, now Viibryd) for most of the last 12 1/2 years - ever since I had what my ob/gyn thought was a post-partum depression. I stopped taking the post-partum dosage at around 6 months, because I thought I was fine - feeling "way too happy almost". But life got very stressful and complicated shortly thereafter, and I had difficulty coping (finishing MBA, 9 month old, husband starting new job in new city, impending move...). Our lives have remained like that (moves, job changes, marrital issues, etc.) since. Now, a year ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I am wondering if the "depression" was really a thyroid problem. I recall feeling like I was vibrating internally at that time. Now I feel that same type of vibration on a somewhat regular basis in the early morning hours. I will awaken with a jittery feeling that centers in my core. I have been on 40 mg Viibryd (missed a dose yesterday. plan to take 1/2 pill with dinner today, as I am down to 1 pill and waiting for new primary care doc at Mayo approve new Rx/re-fill). The Synthroid dosage has not been regulated (25mcg right now from a high of 50 mcg and 5 mcg liothyronine 10 months ago). I am currently gluten-free which I know has lessened the auto-immune attack - TPOab is down 50%, and when I eat gluten it has doubled. This jittery feeling is scary. What is going on and can you help?

Brief Answer:
Such symptoms can occur in hypothyroidism

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. If we consider psychopathology of depression then hypothyroid states is see in a lot of individuals. A number of individuals show hypothyroidism as co-morbidity in depression. In Hashimoto's depression, panic symptoms are common clinical symptoms.

You have been on Vibryd 40 mg per day and were taking the medicines regularly. Now you have vibration like feeling on early morning hours. These vibration like senses can occur due to hypothyroid states. Poorly controlled thyroid can present with tremors or vibration like feelings. These symptoms can be part of anxiety you are having.

Few things I would like to know-

- Since how many days these symptoms have started occurring?

- Do these symptoms occur during sleep or after awakening?

- Any association of these symptoms with stressful situations?

- Do you have any complaints of high BP or diabetes?

- If you have started having these symptoms after you got diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis or they were present before also?

- Any aggravating or relieving factors for these symptoms?

- Whether your depressive symptoms are under control or are still persisting?

Though it appears that these symptoms are part of hypothyroidism still if you can provide me details I have asked then I would comment on this with confidence.

Thanks, tAKE CARE
