What Are The Effects Of Taking Xanax While Pregnant?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: What are the effects/ problems with taking xanax while pregnant? .75 milligrams/ day. I have read there is no conclusive evidence of birth defects. I have a high stress job and do not sleep without the xanax. I also have panic attacks. My dr told me I should try not to take the xanax but just focused on the potential for withdrawals in the newborn. would that low of a dosage cause withdrawal in newborn? Also does Concerta effect the unborn child? 90 mg/ day concerta. I took 72 mg/ day concerta during my first pregnancy and baby was very healthy. But I am wondering if the higher dosage matters?

Brief Answer:
Can cause withdrawal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Xanax is a pregnancy category D drug- means it is known to cause harm to the unborn baby and the low doses that you are taking can cause a withdrawal effect on the baby. It can also cause depression confusion and restlessness in the newborn baby.
Concerta is a pregnancy category C drug- it has shown harmful effects in the animal studies. It is best to avoid using both the medicines as much as you can and do take these only after consulting your gynecologist. Higher doses will have more prominent effect on the baby. Do go for regular antenatal care and Level II scan at 18 weeks to detect any congenital malformations.
