What Are The Congenital Defects In The Fetus Post Intake Of Misoprostol?

Question: I had a home abortion at about 6 weeks along using cytomis 200mg. 4xpills inserted vaginally twice, four hours apart. Large amounts of tissue passed and bleeding subsided. Later on I went to a gynae to check that everything was ok and was told I was still pregnant. The fetus is estimated to be around 8-10 weeks. Everything seems to be normal, position heart rate etc. Gynae advised that with the amount of tissue I had passed previously and considering that at such an early stage I had extremely heightened pregnancy symptoms, there were most likely 2 babies and one had passed out and one had survived, although this isnt an absolute certainty. I cant tell the gynae I took cytomis as its illegal here. I am now considering carrying the pregnancy to term. However I have read that cytomis can cause severe and serious birth defects. How serious can these birth defects be? Are the chances of the fetus being severely affected very high? I need a professional recommendation on whether or not it would be safe to carry to term or if it would be 'kinder' to abort. I can have a detailed scan in 2 weeks time to check for any abnormalities, how accurate is a detailed scan?

Brief Answer:
Chances of anomalies are there

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Misoprostol tablets are found to be associated with cranial nerve anomalies and major congenital defects in the fetus, if taken in early pregnancy.
However the chance of anomalies is not 100%.
So, you can continue with the pregnancy, but do get a detailed anomaly ultrasound at 18 weeks to rule out any congenital anomalies.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thank you very much. In your personal and professional opinion, do you think their is likely a high chance of abnormalities? Would a detailed scan definitely pick up on all the anomalies you've mentioned?

Brief Answer:
Chances of anomalies are there

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Chances of anomalies are there, but in my experience, such anomalies after misoprostol are rarely seen.
However, cranial nerve dysfunction is not picked up by ultrasound.
Rest all major congenital anomalies are detected by ultrasound.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
