What Are The Complications Of Hernia Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: Hello Docs,
I had open inguinal hernia surgery on my left side a week ago and am still feeling a lot of numbness in my groin under the incision. I really don't like this as its uncomfortable, will this return to normal? I am a 21 year old male. I am scheduled to have a hernia on the other side fixed a week from today as well
am worried about more complications (ie. chronic pain, permanant numbness, and excessive abdominal adhesions conisering I had my appendix removed last year as well as the left hernia fixed)after dealing with this numbness and am debating not getting the surgery.

Brief Answer:
This will return to normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

Read and understood your history;
To recapitulate: Male / 21 - left Inguinal Hernia Surgery a week ago - numbness under incision - planned for right hernia next week - worried about complications as mentioned - had Appendix surgery a year ago - debating not getting the surgery.

Let me take the opportunity to explain the occurrences and your fears one by one, please try to understand feel free to ask relevant queries, or if you feel that there is a gap-of-communications.
- Open or close (Laparoscopic) Hernia Surgery needs a lots of dissection and it is inevitable that the smallest of the nerves to be sacrificed for the success of the hernia surgery. This gives that 'typical' uncomfortable numbness' .
*In almost all the cases this gets over and the sensations return to normal.
* Hernia has to be operated to avoid its complications of obstruction in future. You are young so the success of the surgery is far better, you can withstand the surgery better than the old people.

-You can go for another Hernia as scheduled.

-Appendectomy:
This is 'intra-abdominal surgery'. and nothing to do with hernia surgery as hernia surgery involved the dissection and repair of the abdominal wall muscles only; nothing is done inside the abdomen at all.
* So the fears of chronic pain, numbness, excessive abdominal adhesion are baseless.
* No intra-abdominal complications will occur in hernia surgery.

- Please go for right hernia surgery as planned, discuss the numbness issue with your Surgeon. As you are young, there may not be necessity of too much dissection and the right side may be normal soon.

May I please know the details:
- Is it an indirect type of inguinal hernia?
- Was mesh put on the left side?
- Do you have any abdominal issues like pain, bloating or so on?

Yes it is an indirect hernia and I do believe they used mesh on the left side although I'm not 100% sure as he didn't come out and exactly say they were using mesh. For a while I have been dealing with bloating, sometimes to the point where it causes slight pain. I also tend to get a lot of rumbling noises from my abdominal area.

Brief Answer:
Enterclysis / Herniotomy

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
You may please discuss about plain Herniotomy operation - this is because you are just 21 years old and the need of mesh may not be there, although this is solely decided by the Surgeon who examined you,
I hope plain Herniotomy operation gives least complications. And be done in a young man of your age with indirect type of hernia. Mesh may not be needed -no pain, no complications.

Bloating, pain and rumbling should be investigated well and corrected.
Go for Enterclysis barium studies, if there is obstruction you need a corrective surgery.

Get symptomatic relief first.

I hope, this answer helps you to be fit and fine.
Please feel free to discuss till you are satisfied.
By the way which city you reside in?

Thanks so much you are absolutely fantastic, I live in XXXXXXX Rhode Island. The post-op nurse said the pain wouldn't be too bad, but the first few days I had pretty bad pain especially down into my left testicle. I also used to have on and off constipation as well, that hasn't been happening recently though. I don't know if that could be related to the bloating and rumbling.

Brief Answer:
Constipation may be part of bloating and rumbling or a cause of it.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for appreciation.

The pain in the testicle can be due to the neuropraxia, evident in any surgery as mentioned above. If the pain is not there now, that is great.

Numbness is expected to go away soon.

On and off constipation which is not happening recently may or may not be related to the bloating or rumbling, hence better to get investigated just to rule out any obstruction as you had appendix surgery in past. Of course, you can have dietary adjustments in such a way that you avoid foods and beverages that cause constipation, bloating and rumbling and can take a mild laxative if needed so.
Get investigated when you have symptoms to get a positive finding; never get investigated for intestines when you do not have symptoms as the chances of normal reporting is always there.

Please discuss about the plain Herniotomy Surgery or the need of mesh for the right hernia.

All the best.

Please feel absolutely free to discuss anything, I shall be happy to assist you more.
